I appreciate the idea of looking for impurity from your politicians and happily we live in a world where crime pays.

Yes, Wofford was a moderate.

No amount of purity-baiting changes Mr. Specter's ADA and ACU ratings. He's approximately as moderate as Warren Harding.

First, it's Harris Wofford and he, like Specter held moderate liberal views, much like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Wofford was defeated mostly because of his vote to ban assault weapons, a move that upset a number of rural and other Pennsylvanians who replaced him with Rick Santorum.

As for Joe Sestak, he has a good record in Congress, but he too carries many moderate views. And against Pat Toomey, he would be less than an odds on favorite.

I appreciate the idea of looking for pure liberal views from our politicians but sadly, we just don't live in a world where that kind of purity can survive the polluted atmosphere of American politics.

Spector is moderate on matters that don't impede the redistribution of wealth to the few.

He adds nothing to the DP and it's hard to believe that the "democrats" of Pennsylvania- who elected Wofford Harris not all that long ago- can't produce a "democrat" to offer something tangible.

Such is life, Maggie. Sometimes we get what we want but most of the time we get what we get. As for Specter being a 'low-life Republican', if you check his voting record he's actually been quite moderate most of the time.

If there is an evolutionary scale for such politicians, I'd say Specter ranks much higher on the food chain than current opponent Pat Toomey or (Gawd-forbid) Rick Santorum. Sadly, Specter and Toomey are the only choices Pennsylvanians will have in the mid-terms.

So Larry, we're damned if we do and damned if we don't accept Specter as a Democrat. It doesn't matter to me what he claimed to be years ago or now. The bottom line is that he is a corrupt, low-life republican any way you look at him.

With all due respect to Maggie, Arlen Specter was a democrat for many years before he switched parties in the 1990's. This is common among seasoned politians, especially when they're facing stiff competition for their seat. In Specter's case, he is feeling a bit of heat from an extremely conservative Christian republican, former Congressman Pat Toomey. Between Specter and Toomey, I'd take Specter every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I don't trust Specter as far as I can throw a bull by the tail. But then I don't trust many politicians these days, especially republicans.

I look at Specter's picture on his senate web page and it gives me the creeps. http://specter.senate.gov/public/

I would never want to be alone any place with that old coot. He's the kind of person who, if you shook his hand, you're tempted to count your fingers afterwards. I think some people are going to be mighty disappointed in calling this old thug a Democrat.

Specter's ADA rating is in the 40s. Lieberman's ADA rating is 80.
So the meaning is, the right wing of the DP scores a big win.
Which brings up the question: Is the democratic wing of the Pennsylvania DP spineless enough to allow the nomination to be handed to a guy whose life has been devoted to making the poor poorer?
